Blek le Rat has repeatedly expressed his preference for the streets over galleries, maintaining that it is the ethical and social obligation of an artist to connect with as many people as possible. Inspired by African and Iberian art, he also contributed to the rise of Surrealism and Expressionism. "Its absolutely incredible having a really good piece in the street - the day after it is complete thousands and thousands of people have seen it," Prou explained. Perhaps the most influential artist of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso may be best known for pioneering Cubism and fracturing the two-dimensional picture plane in order to convey three-dimensional space. The illegal nature of Prou's work and the growing legitimization of street art has led him to exhibit in galleries with greater frequency. (Prou started stenciling rats around Paris in 1981, when Banksy, whose identity is rumored but not confirmed, was reportedly just in grade school.) His stencil work is featured this month in a survey exhibition at Melbournes. "Every time I think I've painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat has done it as well, only 20 years earlier," Banksy is widely quoted as saying. The father of stencil art, Blek le Rat (born Xavier Prou in 1952 in Paris) was one of the very first graffiti artists in France.
